About the survey

We regularly survey people living in public housing to better understand their views about their home, our housing services, and perceptions of health, safety, diversity and community connection.

The Resident Survey is the largest survey of public housing residents in the country. It has been previously carried out in 2020 and 2019 and over the three waves, we have conducted more than 9,000 interviews.

Victorian Public Housing Resident Survey 2022

In 2022, Homes Victoria surveyed over 3,700 residents living in public housing across Victoria. The sample size is a slight increase from previous years to ensure survey results are representative of the public housing population.

What information is collected

Residents were asked their views on: 

  • their home
  • public housing services
  • their feelings of safety and security
  • connection to their neighbourhood, and
  • community diversity. 

The 2022 survey included additional questions to explore: 

  • residents’ digital literacy and internet access  
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents’ cultural safety and connection, and  
  • engagement with contractors, police and housing offices.

How are survey finding used?

Survey findings are used to:

  • inform evidence-based planning and policy development in multiple program areas across the Victorian government
  • inform evidence-based planning and program development in non-governmental organisations
  • inform local priorities for local governments, and
  • measure and monitor trends over time.

Victorian Public Housing Resident Survey 2019

The results of the 2019 survey across fifteen sites throughout Victoria are now available.

The views, opinions and perceptions of people living in public housing is key to the successful transformation of the department’s housing business, ultimately improving the department’s response to the diverse needs of residents.
